Warriors vs. Rockets Pick

These teams put on one of the best games of the season in Game 4, a contest that remained close despite a variety of misfortunes befalling the Rockets. Houston got a measly 8 points out of Jalen Green, who looked out of rhythm to the point of passivity for the majority of the game. The Rockets also shot 61% from the free throw line, leaving 12 points on the court. All of those factors, combined with a red-hot shooting day from Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski, were barely enough to sink Houston at the end of the game. Now, head coach Ime Udoka’s team gets to return home to try to keep its season alive.

Quite a bit went wrong for the Rockets, but a couple crucial factors did go their way. Fred VanVleet, who shot 34% from three in the regular season, caught fire and hit eight of his 12 attempts from deep. Stephen Curry had a surprisingly quiet game, scoring only 17 points and yielding most of the crunch-time work to his teammate Jimmy Butler. VanVleet will almost certainly cool off in Game 5, while Curry reverts to Game 3 form and posts a better stat line.

It’s hard to believe the Rockets are such big favorites. There has been nothing in their game plan to inspire confidence in them to cover this spread. Their half court offense has been atrocious, and aside from Alperen Sengun, they do not possess a reliable one-on-one scorer. Steve Kerr has used clever rotations to outmaneuver Udoka, who is overly reliant on his starting five to get things done. The Warriors have a very good chance to win this game and should cover with ease.

Timberwolves vs. Lakers Pick

This is another classic Lakers line. The Timberwolves have proven themselves to be the deeper, more well-rounded team over four games, and they still find themselves as substantial underdogs tonight.

At this point, it’s clear that the Lakers need to be firing on cylinders to beat the Timberwolves. Head coach JJ Redick got excellent production from LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Rui Hachimura, and it was enough to keep the game close. However, the lack of production from Austin Reaves and Dorian Finney-Smith sunk Los Angeles, as Reaves was wildly inefficient while DFS only contributed six points. Without every Laker playing well, Los Angeles will struggle to hang around with Minnesota.

On the flip side, the Timberwolves enjoy a considerable advantage in depth. Game 4 featured an Edwards explosion, but Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo both came up with huge plays down the stretch to help salt the game away. The Lakers needed 23 from Hachimura and a 40% clip from beyond the arc to stay with Minnesota last time out. Los Angeles will not shoot as well in Game 5, and with such questionable production from everyone in the lineup aside from Doncic and James, the Timberwolves should cover a ridiculously juiced line fairly easily.
