💸 UEFA Champions League - Round of 16

Abdominal tear or no, it cannot be denied that Novak Djokavic is good at tennis.  Like, scary good.  Novak wrapped up his 9th Australian Open title, his 18th Grand Slam title, and his 1:53 win over Medvedev was his quickest win in a Grand Slam final.

The all time record for Grand Slam wins is 20 (a record co-held by Federer and Nadal), and Novak is closing in.

This week, the UEFA Champions League rolls on with the round of 16 matches continuing today.  Atalanta takes on Real Madrid and Borussia Monchengladbach (not a typo) takes on Manchester City.

We also have the WGC Workday Championship on the PGA Tour to round out some of our betting.  But one player won't be participating.  Tiger Woods was in a car accident yesterday and was rushed to surgery.  We hope he recovers and gives us more fantastic longshot props to bet on.  All jokes aside, we wish him the best.  Golf is better with Tiger in the hunt.

March is almost here, which means the 2021 NCAA Tournament is just around the corner.  Bracket predictions are coming out left and right.

The NHL is hitting its stride, and interestingly enough, there was an outdoor game played in Lake Tahoe over the weekend.

It was in Squaw Valley, California -- just northwest of the lake, a 40-mile drive from where the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe was held on the south shore this past weekend -- where the United States won its first gold medal in hockey at the 1960 Olympics. It was the miracle before the "Miracle on Ice" in Lake Placid, New York, 20 years later.

Ok, let's dig into some lines.

Here's something that stood out.  Pretty surprising - not the team I would have chosen to set this record.

PGA Tour - WGC Workday Championship

The sportsline model predicts that Joaquin Niemann, a 50-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the 2021 WGC-Workday Championship title. Niemann has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

Ok, let's check out our play of the week.

Play of the Week:

UEFA Champions League - Atalanta vs. Real Madrid

Atalanta is favored in this one - with an Atalanta win at +130, Real Madrid sitting at +205, and a DRAW at +255.

First Barcelona and now Real Madrid?  It seems like the brand name teams just aren't what they used to be.

Part of the reason why Real Madrid are dogs in this one are injuries.  As many as nine first-team players are sidelined, including captain Sergio Ramos, top scorer Karim Benzema and €100M signing Eden Hazard.

Real Madrid rely heavily on Benzema to score their goals. He has scored 16 this season in La Liga. Their next most prolific goalscorer is defensive midfielder Casemiro, with six. By contrast, Atalanta have two strikers in double figures in Serie A: Luis Muriel on 16 goals and Duván Zapata on 12.

Atalanta has only lost once since November.  Given the injuries for Real, we think that the edge for Atalanta is deserved.

How to look at this:

  1. This shows you where the bets (#) and the amount of money ($) are laying down across different bets.
  2. The interesting stuff is when the number of tickets and the amount of money differs.

Do with it what you will!

Hot Takes 🔥

These are the hot takes that can seem to come out of left field.  Right or wrong?  Time will tell.  But one thing is for sure - these are spicy:

Ok, this week the take is more lukewarm than spicy, but we have a pick for you nonetheless.

In the matchup with the Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans tonight, we like the under at 222.5 to win out.

The Pistons last 10 game totals have been: 198, 201, 204, 207, 235, 210, 206, 233, 212, and 201.

The 233 was against the Nets (no D, great O) and the 212 is regulation v LAL in a game that went into OT.

The Pelicans are averaging 114.8ppg.

Detroit is averaging 107.8 for the season, but they have gotten rid of Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose.

The 'Degens' 🤪

Obscure games you didn’t even know you wanted to bet on.  The ESPN "The Ocho" of sports betting.

This week, table tennis.  As Forrest Gump said:

I just loved playing ping-pong with my Flexolite ping pong paddle.

So do we Forrest.  So do we.

There are a few leagues you can bet on here. Most of what we can find is in Russia and Ukraine.

But even if you're thousands of miles away, you can put down bets.

Like most sports, you can get really deep here.  We just made some money on Alov vs Zabrodin earlier (3-0 win).

Matches can be streamed on streamnow.ru or sportplus.live.

The WOATs (Worst of all Time) 🤬

The worst stories in sports gambling brought to you for your schadenfreude pleasure.

Ah, the magic of the OVER-UNDER.  How do the odds makers get so good at setting these lines?  Those algos are crazy.

They bring with them the thrill of victory.  But also the agony of defeat.  Particularly when a bet seems "assured".

Reddit user yeotajmu found that out with a under bet in a Utah Jazz - Los Angeles Clippers match up (OU pegged at 227).

I'll let him describe it in his word:

At no point is the game ever on pace to be over. With 26 seconds left, the total is at 210 and I'm lamenting not betting more.
Clipps hit 2 FTs. Utah hits a 3. Clipps hit FTs. Utah hits a 3. Clipps turn it over and FOUL. Utah hits FTs. Clipps hit FTs. Utah bucket.... Etc.
Anyway, 10 or so seconds left and Utah misses, down 4, fouls. Clipps make both. I'm still under.
Then clippers foul the jazz on a 3 with 1.2 second left.
Hit the free throws to push it over.
Are you fucking kidding me.

Here was the cover graph:

Yikes.  Hang in there big fella.  We know that feel.
